How to Give Badass Oral Presentations as an Intern and Medical Student!
Hi, I'm Prerak Juthani - an internal medicine resident at Stanford and I'm here to talk about the importance of oral presentations. Ever feel tongue-tied during morning rounds? You're not alone. But guess what? Crushing oral presentations is a secret weapon for Internal Medicine residents (and residents across all specialties more broadly). This video is intended to boil down the basics and help you see exactly how to thrive.
TL;DR I'll walk you through everything you need to know, from understanding why oral presentations matter to mastering the essential format. You'll learn how to craft a strong one-liner to grab attention, keep your presentation focused with interval events, and present like a pro using the SOAP format. By the end, you'll be ready to confidently deliver impactful presentations during rounds and impress your attendings.
By the end of this video, I hope you feel like you know how to:
- Sharpen your clinical reasoning (thinking on your feet is a doctor's superpower!)
- master communication skills (because clear explanations save lives)
- impress your attendings (stand out from the crowd!)
- boost patient care (effective communication = better outcomes)

Loved it!
First week in residency, just starting in clinic. Grateful we have EMR's to make our lives easier, but there will still be a learning curve. Helpful video, thanks man
About to start my medicine sub-i, this is super helpful!
Hey, Im about to start my intern year and just wanted to lyk that I found this video extemely helpful! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and tips!!
Thank you so much, I start in 2 weeks
I just finished intern year and I feel like the hardest thing is keeping oriented on what is going on *right now*. Especially in the ICU but even floors, as you said “what did we do yesterday.” The one liner is key for that. 1. Who they are 2. Presenting symptoms 3. Reason for admission 4. WHY ARE THEY STILL HERE TODAY. The reason I separate those is they can all be different and not necessarily obvious for a student or intern to understand. Example - presenting symptom may have been vague like “weakness” but reason for hospital admission was actually AKI, and maybe it’s all done but they’re still here pending insurance auth for short term rehab. Those things are not logically related in the same way that medicine is (example: here for heart failure, diuresing still) so it’s hard for me to remember without being systematic. And if I leave out any one of those I might miss what’s actually going on. Example, if I left out point #4 I might not know our main goal today is to talk with case management not necessarily doing anything medically
Super helpful to have a basic format that has everything you'd like in a one-liner. Thanks.
this deck isnt working
how many times did he september? 😂 thank you for this 🙏🏼

The USMLE exam is very difficult to pass, I can't believe i failed step 1after studying with so many materials😞
Sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you study, you also need to pray to God for success
@ very correct
I have a cousin who never studied much, we studied together but she gives most of her time to her phone than her studies after writing the STEP 1 last month she passed and i failed😢, i asked her how she did it, just found out she got help from Mr Richard
Please does anyone know who this Mr Richard is? I really need to speak with him I'm frustrated
Wow so sorry you failed, i have heard so much about Richard but I don't actually have his info
Can you recommend any apps doc?
Hey Prerak, I have been following you since I was in high school and now I'm going to be an MS1 this fall. Thanks for your guidance and tips all these years! Do you think iPad is necessary for med school? If so, what apps should I annotate slides on?
I downloaded the slides but no hyperlinks. Anyone else have that issue?
Still out here giving out great tips. Keep it up, Dr. Juthani!
👍
Love this, thanks doc
I have been watching your channel since the Anki videos, and now I am an incoming IM resident! Thank you for your great and informative videos, as always! Please do more videos like this.
Appreciate you! Will do! Please let me know if you have specific questions and I can try to make videos about them!

do you think doctors who go to medical schools outside of top programs (e.g., not yale and stanford) can be as good as those who graduate from those top programs?
EXCELLENT work! Thank you again!
AMAZING!!
A limitation, unless this has changed, is that Anki does not have OCR to search images nor does it work well with handwriting which is useful for forming mental models
Absolutely helpful!
On residency program I interviewed at, who shall remain anonymous had very much out in the open security cameras in the area of the residency office where the secretary sat. All of these cameras were recording you at all times. If, for any reason you were mean or rude to the secretaries or staff the program would send you out an automatic rejection letter. I was told by one of the residents that it was amazing how many people they could weed out simply because there were so many rude applicants.
Hey I had a question for u as an undergrad. Can we directly apply to an md/mba program or do we need to first get into md and then apply for mba in the second year?
Wow, thank you SO much! I would’ve had a panic attack if I saw that 8 hour timer unannounced 🥲 Appreciate you taking the time to explain so thoroughly! Cheers! 🍻
Why do I have no home screen with anki pro
Thanks for sharing
thank you for this, you are the GOAT!
Appreciate the feedback! Hope it helps you!
Yeah this is pretty accurate for IM intern year. It’s not pleasant. I really think we need a solid 2 week vacation at least every 2 months. Otherwise it’s really tough to recover because the burnout keeps piling. People say sleep early but you have to fit the entire rest of your life into 1-2 hours at night, that’s not realistic.
Super helpful and clear protocol, really appreciate you going through the guidelines and your explanations!
No problem :)
Bro, following you since long time. Your every explanations are very helpful 🙏. I learned a lot on Anki from your videos . If possible in future please make a video on how you use mindmaps in your notes. Do you use any apps to do mindmaps ? Or do you use tablet and pencil for it ? Also, your suggetions / thoughts would be helpful on - Is doing mindmaps helpful to learn a project ? Thank you !
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. I will try to do that! I don't usually use specific mind maps. I usually write my notes as a first pass and then transfer into a second pass through transferring everything to Anki.
@@PrerakJuthani Thank you Bro for your reply 🙏. Noted it 😊. You are a big inspiration for me , i learned how to properly use Anki only from you 🙏. Reading your message made my day ❤
@@RameshKumar-ng3nf Hey man, truly means a lot to hear you say this. I am glad my content can be helpful for you :)
Great video as always Prerak! Is there a playlist for your intern 101 series? Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for the question! Yes, it is right here: ua-cam.com/video/cFwtL8Xn1nY/v-deo.html
I've been doing jump rope for 3 years now and my heart beat is a low 54 beats a min
Thank you for the video. Do you have any video how to be productive during internship/residency? Just a routine day
I think the one liner from a rounds standpoint is even simpler. Its purpose is to help you yourself and your team orient to what’s going on. Patient is a __ year old with (relevant PMH) who PRESENTED WITH ___, was ADMITTED WITH ___, and REMAINS IN THE HOSPITAL TODAY FOR ____ It reminds you why they came Why they were admitted And what are they still doing here which is what your attending is gonna wanna know
Thank you! Will be using this on my rotations as an MS4!
I've been so confused by KSP values for so long, so THANK YOU for being slow and taking your time to explain the WHY of every step. This is so helpful! <3
